i have been part of this site for some six years and i am amazed how diversified folks have become on the secular/political front after leaving the organization.
some are far left and some are far right and others in between.. for me, i had just started getting into politics when i became a jw in 1982. my parents have been life long democrats, but i had voted for reagan not so much because i was really familiar with republican policies, but more because i didn't view carter as a strong leader.
besides high gas prices and long lines at the stations, it did not seem like he was making much headway in the iran hostage crisis and a rescue attempt he signed off on ended in failure.. after leaving the witnesses 10 years later, i was going to make sure i did not miss the upcoming election.
it's sad that such a big country as the usa has only 2 relevant parties. that's just 1 more than communist countries have. it really doesn't matter much which one you vote, it'll always have pretty much the same outcome. you can't just stop a war that has already begun and you can't just start giving away money that never was there.
i live in a very small country and there are 4-5 relevant parties. i hate all of them. i voted for a few smaller parties that didn't make it and soon lost interest in those clowns who run governments.
curious to know how many of you are celebrating the birth of a nation whose soldiers have died and continue to die for the purpose of preserving freedom.
a freedom that allows jehovah's witnesses the right to preach while simultaneously condemning and demonizing the very democracy, country, men and women and legal system that makes their operations possible..
freedom? as in... oil?
i like czech national anthem.. well, since japan national anthem is gloomy, i do not like it.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qn87pi9k99m.

i don't like national anthems.
all of us who have any ties to the jws know that they have their own vernacular, their own slang.
sure, there are formal titles that we can't really get away from: pioneer, ministerial servant, elder, ______ overseer, governing body, the (watchtower) society, etc.
but there are plenty of other bits of parlance they use that i can do without.... for example:.
i like "apostate". because JWs are afraid of them. it's almost as cool as satan.
when talking to people who didn't share the privilege of growing up a JW i also use "excommunication" instead of "disfellowshipping", because that's a word people actually understand.
WTF?

this news was announced today on the journal "le monde": http://www.lemonde.fr/societe/article/2011/06/30/temoins-de-jehovah-la-cour-europeenne-des-droits-de-l-homme-condamne-la-france_1543102_3224.html#xtor=rss-3208.
unfortunately, the european court of human rights has just condemned the french government against jehovahs witnesses.
if you recall, the french state was claiming 23 million euro (abt 33 million us dollars) taxes on contributions received by the french watchtower during the years 1993-96, which, by now, had climbed to about 58 million euro (abt 83 million us dollars) counting interests and charges.. it is not easy to size the wt.
the european union does not (yet?) have a constitution, there were drafts, i think france pushed the idea, but several countries rejected it.
france is on the frontlines here, because it is the most laizist country in europe (apart from sweden maybe).
did anyone else catch this in the talk at the convention 'are you behaving as kingdom citizen?'.

i knew a JW who was always talking about how he's not sure if he'll survive armageddon. In the end he chose to drive his car full speed against a wall. He was 35.
though i have never been a pentecostal, i remember well the frequent stories i heard of this religious movement while going from house-to-house in the past.
i wonder if you guys heard similar stories.
one story i heard a few times was about the confession of some males going to pentecostal churches to peek at girls throwing themselves all over the floor in epileptic movements, and some mention the word "panties" being exposed as an attraction to them.
i know a few pentecostal stories from a developing country i visit every now and then.
one of the pastors wrote to a married woman (husband wasn't pentecostal) a card signed by "god", telling her that it's gods will that the pastor had sexual relations with her. the husband read the letter, went to the pastor and punched his own understanding of gods will into his face.
in a neighbouring country another pastor wrote a letter from "god" to a single girl, with pretty much the same content. she showed the letter to a JW missionary (relative of mine) and asked if god really does write letters...
